A local group of women is organizing a “girlcott” against tee-shirts sold at a popular retail chain.
The protest is being sponsored by the Allegheny County Girls as Grantmakers program.
The group is upset with t-shirts sold at Abercrombie and Fitch, that they say purport negative images of women.
"We were discussing problems in Allegheny county area, and we noticed slogans on t-shirts -- brunette on blonde violence -- so we decided to girlcott these products,” Emma Blackmanmathis of the Women and Girls Foundation told KDKA.
For example, one of the t-shirts read: "I had a nightmare I was a brunette."
"What our girls are saying is we like some other messages that are cool and hype and funny but also empowering and not degrading to women," said Heather Arnet, from the Women and Girls Foundation.
Dozens of people attended the protest at Chatham College.
The Allegheny County Girls as Grantmakers program is run through partnerships with the Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania, The FISA Foundation, the Eden Hall Foundation and the Jewish Women’s Federation.
